Florida Supervised Driving Requirements: Hours, Rules & Restrictions

Florida learner-license holders must follow supervision and time-of-day restrictions while gaining experience behind the wheel. The rules help new drivers practice safely before qualifying for independent driving.

This guide explains the legal supervised-driving requirements. For practical skills and session ideas, read our Florida Behind-the-Wheel Preparation pillar.

How to Track Florida Supervised Driving Correctly

  1. Record the learner-license issue date so the first-three-month daylight-only restriction is easy to identify.
  2. Plan practice with an eligible licensed supervisor age 21 or older in the front seat, including every night session.
  3. After the first three months, gradually introduce appropriately supervised evening practice and finish by the 10 p.m. learner limit.
  4. Separate daylight and night hours in the log, with dates and driving conditions recorded.
  5. Before the minor's licensing appointment, review the total of at least 50 hours, including at least 10 at night, and the required adult certification.

Florida learner driving rules by stage

Plan night practice only after the first three months and within the 10 p.m. learner driving limit. Track day and night hours separately, and have a parent, guardian, or responsible adult age 21 or older certify the experience as FLHSMV requires. The practice log is an organizing tool, not permission to exceed license restrictions.

Situation Requirement
Supervisor Licensed driver age 21 or older in the front passenger seat
First three months Daylight driving only
After first three months Supervised driving allowed until 10 p.m.
Before a minor's first Class E license At least 50 hours of driving experience, including 10 hours at night, certified by qualifying adult

Who Can Supervise a Florida Learner Driver?

A Florida learner must drive with a licensed driver age 21 or older seated in the front passenger seat, closest to the learner's right. A learner's license does not allow driving alone. Check FLHSMV's teen licensing requirements.

When May a Learner Drive?

During the first three months after the learner's license is issued, driving is limited to daylight hours. After that initial period, supervised driving is permitted until 10 p.m. The qualifying supervisor is still required.

How Many Hours of Practice Are Required?

For qualifying drivers under 18 progressing to a Class E driver license, Florida requires certification of at least 50 hours of driving experience, including 10 hours at night. A parent, legal guardian or responsible adult age 21 or older certifies the experience. FLHSMV provides an official Learner's License Driving Log to help track sessions.

How Should You Track Practice?

Record the date, whether practice was during day or night, traffic and weather conditions, time practiced, and skills covered. The official log includes these fields. Keep entries accurate; logged hours are not a substitute for competent driving.

What About Night Practice?

The 10 required nighttime hours must be completed within the learner's applicable lawful driving hours. Because the first three months are daylight-only and later learner driving ends at 10 p.m., plan permitted night practice carefully and confirm current rules.
