Bring the correct documents to your North Carolina DMV driver-license appointment. Regular licenses, adult permits, teen provisional licenses and REAL ID credentials can have different requirements.
Assemble documents in the order the DMV will need them
First, select an accepted proof of identity and date of birth. Next, confirm that your Social Security proof and North Carolina physical-address evidence show consistent identifying information. If your present legal name differs from the name on a birth certificate or other record, bring the certified name-change evidence NCDMV specifies.
Standard license versus REAL ID: a practical example
Someone applying for a standard Class C license may need one accepted North Carolina residency document, while a REAL ID application requires two. Rather than bringing two copies of the same statement, check which independent documents the official REAL ID checklist accepts. If one utility bill has an old address, correct the discrepancy before your appointment.
Insurance is easy to misunderstand
For an adult regular license, NCDMV accepts printed liability-insurance proof or a digital copy securely uploaded during the office visit. Simply displaying a photo is not the same as using NCDMV's secure upload process. An adult learner-permit application is different and does not require this insurance document. Teen Level 2 applicants taking a DMV road test have additional vehicle and insurance obligations. Always check the requirement for your exact transaction.
Day-before checklist
- Verify accepted document types on the official NCDMV checklist.
- Check spelling and legal-name consistency across records.
- Bring originals or certified documents when required.
- Confirm the correct proof of residency for standard versus REAL ID.
- Place insurance and vehicle paperwork in a separate folder if taking a driving test.
Document checklist by application type
| Application | Residency | Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Standard adult Class C license | One North Carolina residency document | Printed proof or secure digital upload |
| Adult learner permit | One North Carolina residency document | Not required for the permit |
| REAL ID driver license | Two residency documents showing current physical address | Required for driver license |
Always confirm which documents NCDMV accepts on its official required-document page and REAL ID requirements page. North Carolina residency examples include a lease, utility bill, financial statement or vehicle registration, but residency proof alone does not establish identity.
Teen Level 1 applicants have a separate pathway including the Driver Education Certificate. The separate Driving Eligibility Certificate was eliminated effective October 1, 2026; see our teen learner permit requirements guide.
Proof of Identity and Date of Birth
NCDMV requires an acceptable document showing your identity and date of birth. If names differ among documents, you may need an official name-change record such as a marriage certificate or court document. Check the accepted-document list before visiting, because an expired or mismatched record may delay your application.
Social Security and Physical Address
Bring your Social Security card or an accepted document verifying your number, along with evidence of your North Carolina physical address. NCDMV lists two address documents for REAL ID, compared with one for a regular driver license. The exact evidence accepted is important.
Lawful Status and Insurance
Applicants born outside the United States may need accepted federal lawful-presence evidence. For an adult regular driver license, NCDMV accepts printed proof of liability insurance from an authorized provider or a digital copy securely uploaded during the office visit. Adult learner-permit applicants are exempt from that insurance requirement.
Special Requirements for Teen Level 2
The teen Level 2 road-test process also involves the existing Level 1 permit, official driving log, liability-insurance evidence, parental or guardian authorization and a properly registered test vehicle. These items belong to the specific provisional-licensing process and should not be confused with a general adult permit checklist.
Important insurance-document note: NCDMV's general first-time adult licensing page still instructs applicants to bring printed proof, while its dedicated liability-insurance guidance allows secure digital upload during an office visit. Bringing printed proof is the simplest precaution. Do not assume showing a photo on your phone counts as a secure upload.
